Papers, 1860-1861.

Copy of a typescript diary kept in Mass. and Conn. by physician and naturalist Charles F. Winslow from 8 Aug. 1860 - 14 Aug. 1861 noting Winslow's commentary on the 1860 Mass. gubernatorial election, in particular his support for his friend, John A. Andrew, the Republican winner of the election; and encounters between Gov. Andrew and abolitionist Wendell Phillips regarding the appropriateness of speeches advocating civil war in early 1861. Entries also document Winslow's scientific interests, including observations of meteor showers and a comet, and the outfitting of an explorer for an arctic expedition. The collection also contains a small amount of correspondence (1860-61) with Winslow, including a letter from Andrew, regarding the gubernatorial campaign.
